Course: BA(Hons) Public Relations
Kirsty McMahon graduated in 2011 as Public Relations Student of the Year and now works as a PR & Marketing Assistant for James Hall & Co (SPAR Distributors, North of England), where she plans public events and competitions as well as handling internal communications.
With an A-Level in Media Studies, Kirsty was first attracted to Public Relations by her passion for Marketing and Journalism. As well as wanting a course geared towards her interests, Kirsty was particularly keen to gain real and relevant working experience, which UCLan’s sandwich year in industry and its UK Progress module afforded.
As part of her sandwich course, Kirtsy spent a year working as a PR & Media Assistant, at East Midlands Tourism. This role allowed Katie to experience both corporate and consumer aspects of PR, and she believes that this considerable and extended working experience set her apart from other graduates.
As well as this valuable industry experience, Kirsty also took a UK Progress module as part of her degree, which entails “…working with a real client who is expecting real results.”. Working for Sunshine Events, Kirsty was able to apply her theoretical knowledge of using Social Media as a PR tool – a skill she has found extremely beneficial since graduating.
Kirsty advise to prospective students; “For anyone looking to take up study – I would definitely recommend it, going to university has been one of my best experiences. Taking up the course gave me the opportunity to learn the skills needed for my chosen career”.
