Name: Katie Slack
Course: BSc (Hons) Pre-registration Nursing (Child)
Katie is taking the BSc (Hons) in Pre- Registration Nursing. She decided to study at UCLan because of the excellent teaching facilities and skills labs available on campus. “The lecture theatres and classrooms are really spacious and the teaching staff are friendly and approachable, which makes all the difference. Advice and guidance is always readily available from tutors and ward staff.”
Katie has worked with children in the past and so felt that taking the child route was a natural progression. “I love being in the ward environment, knowing that I am making a difference. It was the perfect choice for me, as I have always wanted to be a nurse.”
One of the best aspects of the course for Katie is the placements. “Placements run in 8-week blocks so you get to experience life as a nurse, working shifts and being involved in live situations; it’s the best type of experience. The most enjoyable placements for me are on the wards as there is never a dull moment and you are learning constantly.” On placements Katie has had the experience of learning out in the community with the school nurse and she has worked on a children’s surgical day case and on the children’s wards. She feels very confident that once qualified, there will be a rewarding job for her in children’s nursing.
