Course: BA (Hons) Sociology
The F Word Friday 15th March 2013
On Friday 15th March second year Sociology student Janine Conroy successfully co-hosted the ‘F’ Word – a conference that aimed to break down stereotypes attached to feminism and to illustrate the importance of feminism in contemporary society. The conference included guest speaker Dr. Stephanie Genz from Edge Hill University.
Reflecting on the conference, Janine said:
"Our campaign aimed to de-stigmatise feminism within the Preston student community through challenging stereotypes. Our evening event on 15th March was a great success, we had a much bigger audience than expected and received really positive and encouraging feedback. Through guest speakers, short films and photography we explored what it means to be a feminist, what issues feminism tackles and why it is still needed in today's society. Our "video intervention" art exhibition also went down really well which was organised by third year art students. What it all boils down to is that people should not be put off calling themselves a feminist, when all it really means is that you believe women are people who deserve equal treatment to men and to have respect and dignity. We hope our campaign was the start of maybe getting people to build an interest in feminism. We would like to give special thanks to our amazing speakers who were UCLan's own Ann Marie Gallagher, who gave us a fascinating insight into UCLan's reactions to feminism, and Dr. Stephanie Genz who came all the way from Edge Hill University to be with us that night."
