Course: BA(Hons) Public Relations
Chris Smith graduated in 2009, and is now working as a director at Oxford Media Factory – a company responsible for overseeing video productions for both local and corporate business covering a range of sectors across the UK, Europe and the US.
Looking back at his time at UCLan, Chris found the UK Progress modules in which students work on PR projects for external clients gave him a fantastic insight into the real-world PR working experience. As part of his course, he had a year-long placement with BMW as an External Communications Coordinator, in Oxford.
Chris then secured a further short-placement with Oxford University’s Podcasting Department, working on the launch of iTunesU, before returning to complete his degree.
These opportunities helped Chris gain industry insights and additional technical skills, and he graduated with a 2:1. He went on to work in a number of different PR roles, both in a freelance capacity and for established agencies, before deciding that his passions truly lay with his earlier experiences in audio and video productions.
Chris established and works as a director for the Professional Video Production company, Oxford Media Factory and would advise all aspiring students to: “Take advantage of all the career guidance available from University and don’t take knock-backs from potential employers to heart.”
Chris believes that the nature of business and the day to day expectations of working life can only be learned by practical application, which he feels was the highlight of his time at UCLan. Studying PR in an environment, which is geared towards the acquisition of valuable work experience, facilitated his transition from study to a successful and rewarding career.
