In today’s competitive market place, graduates are waking up to the realisation that having real-life work experience on their CV alongside a good degree in their subject area is becoming more and more important on graduation. UCLan has always stressed the importance of combining academic excellence with practical experience and our undergraduate TESOL programmes (with a Modern Languages, English Language or English Literature) are no exception.

Tom studied BA (Hons) TESOL and English Linguistics and graduated with a First Class honours degree in 2013. He was rewarded due to the great effort he put into his achievements, gaining the Trinity CertTESOL and the PTTLS both in 2011, and he was also awarded the School prize for 'Best Dissertation in TESOL'.

In 2011-2012 he took a year out abroad and worked as an English teacher in Badajoz, Spain where he taught general English to teenagers and Business English for 20 hours a week. This also enabled him to tutor in his free time and study Spanish independently.

Tom worked as an EFL teacher at Churchill House Summer School in London and was appointed as Course Leader of UCLan’s Business English Summer School and continued to work for the Cambridge English Group in Preston. He has recently moved to Singapore where he has a new job teaching English. Tom plans to continue his career and studies in ELT and to see as much of the world as possible.

Tom said:“I'd recommend studying TESOL at UCLan to adventurous people who want to write their own, unique, international story. The course cultivates well-qualified EFL teachers; through sharing the expert knowledge of experienced EFL practitioners in a friendly, productive and comfortable setting.

"A good balance between practical development and academic understanding is fundamental to the course, making it all the time fun, as well as interesting. The staff within the TESOL department at SOLLIS are what makes the course what it is. It was hard work, but studying TESOL at UCLan was the best experience of my life. So far.”
